Woods Are Lovely Dark And Deep - Part I

"I am planning to take my parents to California for a week" declared my friend as we talked one weekend.

"I was thinking on similar lines."

Our parents had come from India for a three months vacation.

"Hey, I have an idea. Maybe we can make this trip together. We will be able to meet and it will be a lot of fun to do sightseeing together"

And so it was decided that we should meet at Phoenix airport in Arizona and drive down to our first spot in sightseeing, Grand Canyon.

Fortunately neither her flight was delayed nor mine and we met at the airport as decided at around 9.30 p.m. Picking up the rental car, we hit the road within minutes of arrival at the airport. Being a more experienced driver than myself, my friend was at the wheel. I was sitting next to her with the maps spread onto my lap while the rest of the four occupants of the car dozed off peacefully.

If I am not driving and happen to be in the car, I cannot help but be afraid that the driver will fall asleep behind the wheels so to keep him or her from sleeping (or slipping?) all the way to the side of the road, I start talking. I was thus engaged in my incessant blabber when my friend's voice broke in.

"I wonder if we have to cross this park to go ahead?"

"Hey, I don't see any park in this map but I am sure we have followed it up correctly to this point."

"Well, what do you think we should do?"

"We don't have any choice."

"Maybe it is a small park"

"I hope so"

"What's the matter?" asked a sleepy voice. My friend and myself had an agreed protocol that if we get lost anytime during the trip, we would try our best not to tell so to our parents so as to keep them from getting onto our nerves!!! Observing that protocol, I replied "Nothing uncle, seems that we have to cross this park on our way"

Silence again at the back seat!!!

"Should I call 911? Maybe they will know what this area is" I whispered to my friend.

"Ok. Try that but keep an eye on for any signboards that might come up and I will do the same." She whispered back.

I picked up my cell phone but to my dismay found that it was flashing "No Service" message. "Failed me just when I needed it" I flung it across the dashboard in frustration and at the same time my friend exclaimed.

"What in the world is that?"
